Jesus shared the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist with his apostles during the Last Supper. He presents the bread and wine, consecrates it into His flesh and blood, and asks for God to bless them. Then Jesus spoke these everlasting words: "Do this in remembrance of me."
It is important to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist so that we, as Catholics, can be equipped to be like Christ in the world. When we receive, we become bonded to those who receive the Eucharist as well.
